Ellie Hutchison serves as the co-facilitator of Sisters and Seekers, a local gathering of the national Nuns and Nones movement, where she partners with religiously-diverse millennials and the Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids to build intergenerational, spiritual community.
Katie Gordon is a graduate student at Harvard Divinity School studying and exploring communal and spiritual life, politics and ethics, and media and storytelling. She is one of the national organizers of Nuns & Nones, a movement of Catholic Sisters and spiritually diverse millennials exploring together what new forms of prophetic community might look like. Additionally, Katie works with the How We Gather team at the On Being Impact Lab as an intern, primarily supporting their Formation Project, an experiment in spiritual formation for the 21st century.
The three participants whose backgrounds were somewhat dissimilar still highlighted a common need to affirm their individuality,
but not to the degree that today’s society would have. Their desire to be connected with others in a satisfying and creative manner was a need they also held in common. The different ages of three, and times of life did, however, show a noteworthy contrast. Katie and Ellie, the two younger women, exhibited a deep need to find a way to reconcile their individuality with their need to be part of a greater whole. Sister Barbara seemed to have come to terms with the two seemingly disparate needs in her life, perhaps as a result of her commitment to a life of service.
